Every answer with the reasoning behind it. Worth reading after you have tried the set — or on its own, if you are a parent marking it.

  1. A bar graph shows how many books four pupils read: Ali 8, Bala 12, Chen 5, Dina 15. How many books did they read altogether?

    Answer: 40

    8 + 12 + 5 + 15 = 40 books.

  2. A bar graph shows how many books four pupils read: Ali 8, Bala 12, Chen 5, Dina 15. How many more books did Dina read than Chen?

    Answer: 10

    15 − 5 = 10 books.

  3. A table shows the fruit sold in a shop: apples 45, pears 30, mangoes 25, bananas 60. Which fruit sold twice as many as pears?

    Answer: Bananas

Pears sold 30, and 2 × 30 = 60, which is the number of bananas.

  4. A table shows the fruit sold in a shop: apples 45, pears 30, mangoes 25, bananas 60. How many pieces of fruit were sold in total?

    Answer: 160

    45 + 30 + 25 + 60 = 160 pieces of fruit.

  5. A price list shows: pen $2.50, book $4.80, ruler $1.20. How much do 2 pens and 1 ruler cost altogether?

    Answer: $6.20

    2 × $2.50 = $5.00, plus $1.20 makes $6.20.

  6. A table shows pupils in four classes: 4A 38, 4B 41, 4C 36, 4D 40. How many more pupils are in 4B than in 4C?

    Answer: 5

    41 − 36 = 5 pupils.

  7. A table shows pupils in four classes: 4A 38, 4B 41, 4C 36, 4D 40. Which class has the fewest pupils?

    Answer: 4C

36 is the smallest of 38, 41, 36 and 40, so 4C has the fewest.

  8. A tally chart shows favourite sports: football 24, netball 18, swimming 12, running 6. What fraction of the pupils chose swimming?

    Answer: 1/5

    There are 24 + 18 + 12 + 6 = 60 pupils, and 12/60 simplifies to 1/5.

  9. A table shows cakes sold: Monday 120, Tuesday 95, Wednesday 140, Thursday 105. What was the average number sold per day?

    Answer: 115

    120 + 95 + 140 + 105 = 460, and 460 ÷ 4 = 115 cakes a day.

  10. A bus timetable shows departures at 09 15, 09 45, 10 15 and 10 45. A passenger arrives at the stop at 09 50. How long must she wait for the next bus?

    Answer: 25 min

    The next bus is at 10 15, and from 09 50 to 10 15 is 25 minutes.
