Pollination puts the pollen on the stigma, the tube carries it down, and fertilisation is the joining with the ovule. Only then does the ovule become a seed.
Why do many plants have features that make cross-pollination more likely than self-pollination?
Answer: Offspring from two parents vary more, which helps the species survive change.
Two parents means a wider mix of characteristics among the offspring. If conditions change, a varied population is more likely to contain individuals that cope.
