  1. $960 is shared among three children in the ratio 2 : 3 : 5. How much does the child with the middle share get?

    Answer: $288

    2 + 3 + 5 = 10 units, so 1 unit is $96 and 3 units are $288.

  2. The ratio of red counters to blue counters is 7 : 4. There are 84 red counters. How many blue counters are there?

    Answer: 48

    7 units = 84, so 1 unit = 12, and the 4 blue units are 48.

  3. Two numbers are in the ratio 5 : 9. Their difference is 28. What is the smaller number?

    Answer: 35

    The difference is 9 − 5 = 4 units = 28, so 1 unit = 7 and the smaller number is 5 × 7 = 35.

  4. A box holds red and blue beads in the ratio 5 : 3. After 16 red beads are added, the ratio becomes 7 : 3. How many blue beads are there?

    Answer: 24

    The blue beads stay at 3 units. The red beads rose by 2 units, and those 2 units are 16, so 1 unit = 8 and the 3 blue units are 24.

  5. Which ratio is equivalent to 8 : 12?

    Answer: 2 : 3

    Both 8 and 12 divide by 4: 8 ÷ 4 = 2 and 12 ÷ 4 = 3, giving 2 : 3.

  6. The ratio of boys to girls in a choir is 4 : 5. What fraction of the choir are girls?

    Answer: 5/9

    4 + 5 = 9 children in each group of units, and the girls are 5 of them, so 5/9.

  7. Ali and Bala share some stamps in the ratio 3 : 2. Ali then gives 12 stamps to Bala and they now have the same number. How many stamps did Ali start with?

    Answer: 72

    Let 1 unit be the original difference. After Ali gives 12 stamps, 3u − 12 = 2u + 12, so u = 24 and Ali started with 3 × 24 = 72.

  8. The ratio of A to B is 2 : 3 and the ratio of B to C is 3 : 5. What is the ratio of A to C?

    Answer: 2 : 5

    B is already 3 in both ratios, so A : B : C = 2 : 3 : 5 and A : C = 2 : 5.

  9. A drink is mixed from juice and water in the ratio 3 : 7. How much juice is in 2 litres of the drink?

    Answer: 600 ml

    3 + 7 = 10 parts. 2 ℓ is 2000 ml, so 1 part is 200 ml and 3 parts of juice are 600 ml.

  10. Class 6A has boys and girls in the ratio 5 : 4. Class 6B has them in the ratio 3 : 2. Which statement is true?

    Answer: 6B has a larger fraction of boys

    6A is 5/9 boys (about 56%) and 6B is 3/5 boys (60%), so 6B has the larger fraction of boys.
