In the same diagram, which part develops into the fruit after fertilisation?
Answer: R
R is the ovary. After fertilisation the ovary grows into the fruit, and the ovules inside it become the seeds.
Pollen from another flower lands on P in the diagram above. Which two statements are then correct?
Answer: A and B only
Pollination is pollen landing on the stigma. Fertilisation is the later joining of the pollen with an ovule, and only after that do seeds form.
Which features suggest a flower is pollinated by insects?
Answer: large brightly coloured petals and sticky pollen
Insect-pollinated flowers advertise themselves: big colourful petals, scent and nectar. Their pollen is sticky so it clings to an insect's body.
Based on the table above, why did flower B still form a fruit even with its anther removed?
Answer: Bees brought pollen to it from another flower.
A flower does not need its own pollen — it needs pollen to arrive. B still had a stigma for bees to deliver to, while C had none, which is why C failed.
Why do wind-pollinated flowers produce enormous amounts of very light pollen?
Answer: Most of it is blown away and lost, so a great deal is needed for any to arrive.
The wind does not aim. Nearly all the pollen lands somewhere useless, so vast amounts are released to make it likely that some reaches another flower.
