  1. A farmer had 480 eggs. He sold 1/4 of them in the morning and 1/3 of the remainder in the afternoon. How many eggs were left?

    Answer: 240

    Morning leaves 3/4 × 480 = 360. Afternoon sells 1/3 of 360 = 120, leaving 360 − 120 = 240.

  2. The ratio of boys to girls in a club is 3 : 5. There are 24 more girls than boys. How many children are in the club?

    Answer: 96

    The difference is 5 − 3 = 2 units = 24, so 1 unit = 12. Altogether 8 units = 96 children.

  3. A jacket costs $60. During a sale it is reduced by 25%. How much is saved?

    Answer: $15.00

    25% of $60 is $15.00.

  4. A printer prints 45 pages an hour. How many hours does it take to print 300 pages, to the nearest whole hour above?

    Answer: 7

    300 ÷ 45 = 6 remainder 30, so a seventh hour is needed: 7 hours.

  5. Priya had $35. She spent 2/5 of it on a book. How much did she have left?

    Answer: $21

    2/5 of $35 is $14, and $35 − $14 = $21.

  6. A 96 cm ribbon is cut into two pieces in the ratio 1 : 3. How long is the longer piece?

    Answer: 72 cm

    1 + 3 = 4 units, so 1 unit is 96 ÷ 4 = 24 cm, and the longer piece is 3 × 24 = 72 cm.

  7. After 4 tests Wei Ming's average was 68 marks. What must he score in the fifth test for his average to be 72?

    Answer: 88

    He needs 5 × 72 = 360 in total and has 4 × 68 = 272, so the fifth test needs 88.

  8. Tap A fills a tank at 8 litres a minute and Tap B at 4 litres a minute. Both are turned on together. How long does it take to fill a 120-litre tank?

    Answer: 10 min

    Together they fill 8 + 4 = 12 litres a minute, and 120 ÷ 12 = 10 min.

  9. 35% of the 60 pupils in a class walk to school. How many pupils do NOT walk to school?

    Answer: 39

    100% − 35% = 65%, and 65% of 60 is 39 pupils.

  10. A shop sold $24 of goods on Saturday and $18 on Sunday. Sunday's takings were what fraction of Saturday's?

    Answer: 3/4

    18/24 simplifies to 3/4, so Sunday took 3/4 of Saturday's amount.
