Money questions for Primary 5 Maths

1. A watch costs $120. It is sold at a 15% discount. What is the discounted price?

   Answer: $102

   15% of $120 is $18, and $120 − $18 = $102.

2. $90 is shared between two sisters in the ratio 4 : 5. How much does the older sister get if she has the larger share?

   Answer: $50

   4 + 5 = 9 units, so 1 unit is $10, and 5 units are $50.

3. 3 kg of prawns cost $23.40. What is the cost of 5 kg?

   Answer: $39.00

   $23.40 ÷ 3 = $7.80 per kg, and 5 × $7.80 = $39.00.

4. Nadia had $200. She spent $73.50 and put $45 into her savings. How much did she have left?

   Answer: $81.50

   $73.50 + $45 = $118.50, and $200 − $118.50 = $81.50.

5. Books cost $14.50 each. What is the greatest number of books that can be bought with $100?

   Answer: 6

   $100 ÷ $14.50 = 6 books, with $13 left over.

6. A bus fare of $45 rises by 20%. What is the new fare?

   Answer: $54

   20% of $45 is $9, so the new fare is $54.

7. Four friends shared a bill of $84 equally. How much did each pay?

   Answer: $21

   $84 ÷ 4 = $21.

8. A box of 12 pens costs $36. What is the cost of one pen?

   Answer: $3.00

   $36 ÷ 12 = $3.00 per pen.

9. Ravi spent 2/5 of his money and had $30 left. How much money did he have at first?

   Answer: $50

   He had 3/5 left, which is $30, so 1/5 is $10 and the whole amount is 5 × $10 = $50.

10. Mrs Chan bought 3 mugs at $12.75 each and paid with $50. How much change did she receive?

    Answer: $11.75

    3 × $12.75 = $38.25, and $50 − $38.25 = $11.75.
