    Answer: freezing

    A liquid becoming a solid is freezing, so water turning into ice is freezing.

  2. In the graph above, why does the line stay flat for a while partway up?

    Answer: The ice is melting, and the temperature does not rise until it has all melted.

    While a solid is melting, the heat going in is used to change the state rather than to raise the temperature. Only once all the ice has melted does the temperature climb again.

  3. At what temperature does pure water freeze?

    Answer: 0 °C

    Pure water freezes at 0 °C, which is the same temperature at which ice melts.

  4. Which two of these would make an ice cube melt faster?

    Answer: A and B only

    Melting is faster when heat reaches the ice more quickly. A warm room means more heat flowing in, and crushing gives more surface for that heat to enter through.
